USDT Networks
USDT Networks Explained: What Is the Difference Between TRC-20 and ERC-20?
TRC-20 and ERC-20 are standards on different networks. Learn how the choice affects compatibility, fees, and a safe USDT transfer.
Same token name, different network
USDT can appear in wallets on multiple blockchains, but each token instance is recorded on a particular network. ERC-20 is a token standard on Ethereum; TRC-20 is a token standard on TRON. A similar-looking address or the same ticker does not prove that the receiving destination supports the selected network.
What changes when you choose a network?
- Compatibility: The recipient must accept USDT on the exact network you send from.
- Fees: Each network meters transaction resources differently; do not assume one is always cheaper.
- Processing: Confirmation times and deposit requirements can vary by chain and receiving service.
- Token identity: Fake tokens can reuse a familiar name or symbol. Verify the official source for the network.
A safer selection process
Open the recipient’s deposit instructions and select a network explicitly. Compare it with the network shown in your wallet. If the required network is not offered on both sides, stop and ask through the recipient’s official support channel. Do not choose based only on address appearance, and do not use a bridge or contract you have not verified.
Check the fee, minimum deposit, and any memo or tag requirement too. When trying a new network or destination with a large amount, a small test can limit the size of a mistake, but it cannot remove the underlying risk.
A simple example
Hypothetical example: a deposit page says “Ethereum / ERC-20,” while your wallet is set to “TRON / TRC-20.” Stop until both sides support the same network—even if both screens show USDT.
Key takeaway
Choose the network from the recipient’s instructions and match it on the sending side. Do not infer compatibility from the ticker or address shape.
