Is USDT Stable? What a Dollar Peg Means—and What It Does Not

A dollar peg is a target, not a promise that the market price never moves. Understand liquidity, issuer, reserve, and network risks before using USDT.

“Stable” does not mean “risk-free”

Stablecoins aim to reduce price swings compared with many other cryptoassets, often by tracking a currency such as the US dollar. But a market price can move away from its target, and liquidity or conversion access can vary between venues. The token also depends on its issuer, the blockchain it uses, and the wallet or service handling it.

Four things a peg does not settle

  1. Market price: Supply, demand, and liquidity can move the trading price above or below a target for a time.
  2. Reserves and disclosures: Read what the issuer publishes, including the report date, scope, and type of information.
  3. Access and redemption: Terms and operational or regulatory restrictions can differ. Do not assume every user can redeem in the same way.
  4. Network and custody: A wrong-network transfer, lost key, or service outage is separate from price stability.

Tether says USD₮ is intended to track the US dollar and publishes circulation and reserve information. Treat its transparency page as issuer-published information, not a substitute for reading disclosures or assessing risk. Do not treat USDT as an insured bank deposit, and do not use money you cannot afford to lose.

Questions to ask before using it

Who controls the keys? Which network will be used? What are the fees? What are the service’s redemption terms? Is a transfer necessary now? These questions are more useful than relying on a single displayed price.

A simple example

Hypothetical example: if a market quote differs slightly from the target at a particular moment, that describes the quote at that time; it does not by itself explain the cause or guarantee an automatic return.

Key takeaway

Separate the peg target, the market price, and redemption access. They are related, but they are not the same thing.
